About this activity

City Math Builder is a single-player isometric city-building game for middle schoolers that uses budgeting, percentages, ratios and chart reading to decide what to build next. Students plan roads, homes, shops and services while tracking city stats.

Who is City Math Builder for?

Middle-school students practicing applied math such as percentages, ratios, unit rates and budgeting, from those needing guided whole-number steps up to multi-step constraint problems.

What does City Math Builder teach, and how?

Students pick a difficulty level, then tap a build tool and place it on the city map, connecting homes and shops to roads. Planning Decision screens pose quick math checks tied to the build, with hints available, and each month the dashboard updates population, treasury, happiness, jobs, traffic, pollution and energy toward a stated goal.

How is success measured in City Math Builder?

Progress is measured by City Stars shown as a score out of 20, awarded for correct planning decisions and staying on budget. A Mayor's Report at the end lists stars earned, final city stats, and the math ideas used, with options to play again or keep building.

How long does City Math Builder take, and what does it need?

Play happens in month-by-month rounds within a single saved city that can be resumed later. It is designed for touch use on a tablet, with tap-to-build controls, sound effects, and no partner needed.
