About this activity

Space Signal is a typing game where students work as a space station communications officer, typing transmissions accurately to restore contact with a lost colony. It builds typing accuracy and speed through themed missions.

Who is Space Signal for?

Suits students in grades 6-12 who already know the keyboard layout and are practicing or improving typing accuracy and speed, since the interface and sentence complexity assume comfort with reading and typing full sentences.

What does Space Signal teach, and how?

Students type displayed transmission lines exactly as shown, choosing a difficulty band (Cadet, Navigator, or Commander) that controls sentence length and punctuation complexity. Each mission strings together several messages, tracking signal strength, clear-channel streak, and integrity as they type, ending in a Mission Transmission Report.

How is success measured in Space Signal?

The game shows signal strength, clear streak, integrity, score, WPM, and time during play, then a final report with accuracy, keys to practice, and a restored route map. Students can retry a mission for better signal or move on to the next one.

How long does Space Signal take, and what does it need?

Each mission is a short timed session broken into several messages, with progress saved automatically on the device so students can resume later. It offers a sound toggle, a focus mode without timers or extra animation, and a reduce-motion option, and works with keyboard typing only.
