About this activity
Terminal Zero is a cinematic typing game where students act as junior cyber-defense operators, completing missions by typing displayed text exactly to practise speed and accuracy.
Who is Terminal Zero for?
Designed for students in grades 6-12, this suits typists from beginners to advanced, since it offers Core, Advanced, and Expert difficulty bands covering plain words up through punctuation and pseudo-commands.
What does Terminal Zero teach, and how?
Students type mission briefings and terminal lines exactly as shown, with the current letter highlighted and errors causing a brief red pulse instead of a penalty. Missions string together several typing challenges ending in a combined incident-response sequence, with optional 30-second calibration drills targeting weak keys between missions.
How is success measured in Terminal Zero?
Each challenge and mission ends with a debrief showing accuracy, WPM, score, streak, improvement versus the session start, strongest keys, and keys to practice, with rank progress across five ranks from Recruit to Elite Operator. Accuracy is prioritized, with speed bonuses and streak rewards only kicking in once accuracy is high.
How long does Terminal Zero take, and what does it need?
A single calibration drill takes about 30 seconds, while missions are made of several short typing challenges; progress saves locally so students can continue their rank over multiple sessions. It needs a keyboard, and offers toggles for sound and reduced motion.
